Newly crowned Miss Belgium Cilou Annys apologizes for trampling on the country’s flag on a cover.
Miss Belgium, the Flemish young Cilou Annys, has apologized Wednesday after appearing on the cover of the publication P-magazine stomping on the flag next to the Belgian Flemish separatist leader Bart De Wever, scissors in hand.
“One is ambassador of Flanders and the other from Belgium. You want to split the country and one hopes that never come,” you can read the publication that contains the phrase in front of the separatist De Wever: “Belgium is the country failed the world over.
The national committee of the Miss Belgium contest on behalf of the prettiest in the country, has sent a statement in which he apologized to anyone who “may have felt embarrassed by the image,” the agency Belga reported. She says Flemish Cilou Annys posed in a magazine over the flag to show who resides in Belgium.
The letter of apology is used various arguments to justify the graphic report, as Miss Belgium treads the flag “to show that resides on the Belgian territory.”
Or that, beyond the photographs, the text of the interview Cilou states, “is proud of its proclamation as Miss Belgium and represent the unity” of Iraq.
The controversy, which has been echoed by the press on both sides, is another sign of the division between Walloons and Flemings, who has led various government crisis in Belgium since the last national elections in June 2007.
Annys, 18, topped only ten days ago, was born in Bruges (Flanders), but their grandparents are French speakers. EFE
